Communication Protocols Lab

Protocols tailored to your application

For substation automation, the international standard for data communication between metering, protection, control, transformer and switching devices within substations is IEC 61850. IEC 61850 is being extended towards communication between substations, decentralized energy resources and hydropower plants, thus becoming increasingly important. Another important feature of IEC 61850 is a language for engineering and configurating substation automation systems. HVSS has gained deep knowledge of the IEC 61850 standard. We offer  consultancy and software solutions to help you to realize a reliable communication environment according to IEC 61850.

DNP3 is an open and public protocol developed with the aim to to achieve open, standards-based Interoperability between substation computers, RTUs, IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) and master stations (except inter-master station communications) for the electric utility industry. It is now used across several industries.

DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol) is an open protocol for the transmission of data using serial and IP communication that is primarily used by electrical utility industry. DNP3 was developed for the monitoring, data acquisition and control of power system equipment and for ensuring interoperability between thousands of IEDs, RTUs and operational SCADA systems..

IEC 61850 is a standard for the design of electrical substation automation systems, which defines fast communication of events (GOOSE) or data set samples (Sampled Values) through Ethernet frames. Standard naming and object modelling are based on a Substation Configuration Language (SCL), describing data exchange at device and substation levels. IEC 61850-8-1 Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) is a control model mechanism in which any format of data (status, value) is grouped into a data set that must be sent and received within a time period of 3 milliseconds for the most restrictive protection applications.

Sampled values are for the fast transmission and reception of voltages, currents and status information between transformers and transducers (CT, PT…), and primary power system equipment.

IEC-60870-5-104 is an International Communications Protocol Standard for the telecontrol of electric power transmission systems. The standard specifies the use of permanent directly connected links between Telecontrol stations.

IEC 62056 is a set of standards for electricity metering data exchange by International Electrotechnical Commission. The IEC 62056 standards are the international standard versions of the DLMS/COSEM specification.

C37.118 is the IEEE Standard for Synchrophasor Measurements for Power Systems, which defines synchrophasors, frequency, and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) measurement under all operating conditions. It specifies methods for evaluating these measurements and requirements for compliance with the standard under both steady-state and dynamic conditions.

Modbus is a data communications protocol originally published by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Modbus has become a de facto standard communication protocol and is now a commonly available means of connecting industrial electronic devices. It is widely used for Industrial Automation and Energy system applications.
